Marquee vs Tent: What Is the Difference?

In Dubai the words marquee and tent are used to mean almost the same thing, yet they can describe very different structures. Here is what actually sets them apart, and why the type of structure matters far more than the label.

The short answer

A tent is the broad term for any temporary fabric structure. A marquee usually means a larger, more finished event structure, often framed or poled, with a proper interior. In Dubai the two words are used interchangeably, so the structure type, not the name, is what you should focus on.

What people mean by a tent

Tent is the umbrella word. It covers everything from a small pop-up canopy to a large, engineered event structure. In the events world, calling something a tent does not tell you much on its own, because it could be a simple shade or a fully finished, air conditioned wedding structure. What matters is the type and the specification.

What people mean by a marquee

Marquee is the more premium word. It usually describes a larger event structure with a proper interior, lining, flooring and lighting, built for weddings, corporate events and parties. Some marquees are held up by central poles, others by an external frame, and the best for large events is the clearspan marquee, which has no internal poles at all.

Marquee vs tent in Dubai

Locally, tent is the more common search term and marquee carries a slightly more upmarket, UK-English feel. Both refer to the same event structures. A supplier offering marquee hire and one offering tent rental are, in practice, offering the same thing. So rather than choosing between the words, choose the right structure type for your event.

Which structure should you choose?

The decision that actually matters is the structure type, and it comes down to your guest count, venue and the look you want. A few quick pointers for Dubai events:

  • Large weddings and corporate events: A clearspan marquee for its open, pole-free interior and easy air conditioning.
  • Romantic garden weddings: A sailcloth marquee for its soft, glowing translucent canvas.
  • Desert and beach events: A stretch tent that shapes to sandy and uneven ground.
  • Premium, starlit celebrations: A transparent, clear-top marquee, always with air conditioning.

Whatever you call it, the right structure, sized properly and cooled for the climate, is what makes an event work in Dubai. See our full guide to marquee and tent types to compare them side by side.
